I would attest to the fact that the time spent of getting your name out there first as a proven solution provider and use your current company as the vehicle in that order. There is nothing wrong with helping your company recover it's ROI on you, and then delivering beyond that. I don't spend time now wondering where that referral came from, but usually ask so that way I can compliment the sender. I take networking very serious as pay it forward.
